Every year, SunWiz identifies the leaders in Australia’s battery market — and after a decade of observing the rise and fall of dozens of players, we’ve developed a clear view of what drives brand success.
In the 2025 SunWiz Annual Battery Market Report, we’ve gone further than ever before. For the first time, battery brands were invited to verify their claimed volumes, helping us publish the most accurate leaderboard yet. Our rankings draw on verified data, cross-checked against government and non-government sources, providing a uniquely reliable view of brand performance.
So what does it take to reach the top?
Market Leaders by the Numbers
In 2025, Sungrow earned recognition as the Top Volume Residential Battery Brand, with AlphaESS following in second place. GoodWe also ranked within the top five.
But raw volume only tells part of the story. Behind the numbers lies a complex set of success factors — and challenges — that every brand must navigate.
It’s Not Just About Price
While competitive pricing helps, it’s not the primary driver of success. Installers have learned — often the hard way — that support, reliability, and product quality matter far more in the long run.
A poorly supported product, no matter how cheap, is a liability. As a result, many of the brands with significant market share have established reputations, well-developed support infrastructure, and proven track records in Australia.
Longevity Builds Trust
The top-performing battery brands in 2024 all share one key trait: they’ve been operating in Australia for over a decade.
That kind of longevity signals:
- Commitment to the local market
- Investment in Australian-specific product development
- Support networks that installers can rely on
- Consistency in brand presence and trade show participation
By contrast, there’s a revolving door of “cemetery brands” — international players that make a brief appearance and disappear just as quickly. Brand trust and staying power are closely linked.
Portfolios Matter
Brands that offer a range of solutions — covering PV, batteries, and hybrid inverters — enjoy a clear edge. The installer experience is complex:
- Some projects are PV + battery from day one
- Others involve retrofitting a battery to an existing PV system
- Some scenarios require parallel integration with legacy hardware
In all cases, brands that simplify installation, reduce configuration friction, and streamline commissioning are more likely to win installer loyalty.
Loyalty, Scale, and Share-of-Wallet
SunWiz’s monthly ESS market subscription provides a more granular look at brand performance beyond just volume. It shows the drivers of market share: customer reach (horizontal axis), share of customer wallet (vertical axis) and product loyalty (colour), along with plenty of other information available in other charts.
- Sungrow leads in the number of active installers, share-of-installer-wallet, and installer loyalty
- Tesla is offered by around 40% of installers, but it occupies a smaller share of their portfolios, and a lower proportion of Tesla volume comes from high-frequency buyers
- Sigenergy, a rising entrant, achieved 35% share-of-wallet in Q1 2025 and is likely to see further gains as more installers reach 12 months of product use
This shows that success isn’t just about being used widely — it’s about being used consistently, across a high volume of installations.
The Long Tail: 51 Brands, Less Than 1% Market Share Each
The Australian battery market isn’t just top-heavy — it has a long tail. In 2024, 51 brands each had less than 1% market share, but collectively accounted for 10% of total volume.
For new entrants, that’s both a warning and an opportunity. To move beyond the tail, brands must focus on:
- Installer education and support
- Effective distributor relationships
- Genuine product-market fit
- A scalable and sustainable pricing model
