Which is the best solar retailer in Australia?

As a consumer, it can be hard to know which company to choose, and that decision takes into consideration many factors.

It’s difficult to judge who is the best solar retailer for any consumer, considering the wide range of factors involved and the fact that there are over 4,000 solar retailers in Australia alone.

Ultimately, it’s a personal decision to determine which company is the best fit for your individual needs.

What SunWiz can say for certain is that the best-rated solar companies are those that consistently deliver a great customer experience and outstanding outcomes for their customers.

Why Number of Reviews is Important

50% of businesses in the Solar Industry have a 5-star Google Rating. When everyone is showing off their 5-star Google Review status, it’s impossible to tell businesses apart.

The number of reviews is important because it differentiates between a small business (that’s well-rated because the business owner does everything) and a larger business that’s well-rated because their business processes are great (whether or not the owner is on holiday).

The more reviews you get, the greater chance there is of receiving a less-than-glowing review. It’s statistically near-impossible to maintain a perfect five-star rating when you’ve got hundreds of reviews.  That’s why SunWiz applies minimum-thresholds (100 reviews) so that each company’s rating is statistically-significant.

Why do we collect from multiple different sites?

We do this because many solar companies will direct their happy customers to one specific review site. As a result, they may receive high ratings on that particular site. But customers who have had negative experiences may provide ratings on other review sites. This means that a company may have good reviews on one site, but not perform well on other review websites.

As companies can cleverly direct clients to favourable review websites, this may lead to a biased opinion of how much their customers actually love them.

That’s why we collate reviews from more than three commonly-used review sites, and perform a weighted average of all those reviews. We also exclude from consideration companies that have >90% of reviews on one platform.

SunWiz gathers reviews from multiple platforms to identify the best-rated retailers.

Wait, isn't 4.2 Stars Really Good?

Achieving an average rating of 4.2 stars might sound good at first glance. A restaurant that achieved a 4.2-star rating on Google reviews would be considered exceptional.

However, in the solar industry, a 4.2-star rating as an average makes you one of the worst solar companies in the country to choose from.

That’s why SunWiz is offering this enhanced recognition for companies that rank highest in reviews.

Want to see if you are eligible to be a Best Rated Retailer?

Because of the semi-automated way we collect reviews across multiple sites, its possible we may have overlooked one of your review sites. If you believe you’re eligible for an award but haven’t been contacted.

Different review categories

We note that because we are looking across multiple review sites, it can be quite difficult to achieve a 5-star rating when dealing with a large volume of customers. It’s relatively easy for microbusinesses, where the business owner has personal interactions with every customer and can control the customer experience, this is why so many companies have a handful of 5-star reviews. However, if we were to base our assessment solely on 5-star ratings, there wouldn’t be much to distinguish one retailer from another, as there would be thousands of very small retailers in that category. This is not an ideal way to differentiate one company from another.

We see that larger businesses find it more difficult to maintain a perfect 5-star rating, and of course, if you prefer a small local business, then you can choose to do so. However, our goal is to identify companies that stand out from the crowd by having a large volume of excellent reviews. Sunwiz considers three key factors when determining its awards.

All-Star Category

The All-Star category recognizes companies that have received at least 50 reviews in the past year, spread across more than one platform and achieved a rating of 4.95 or more. The Top 40 companies (by average rating) receive an award.

Most Popular Category

The Most Popular category recognizes the Top 20 companies (by #Reviews) that have received at least 120 reviews in the last years spread across more than one platform and achieved a rating of 4.8 or higher. The Top 20 companies (by number of reviews) receive an award.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    1. What Technologies are covered?

Solar power and energy storage systems. Our coverage is best in the residential and small-commercial segments.

We provide information on the following countries. In some countries we are able to provide state-level analytics.

Most of the major manufacturers (and many distributors) of panels. inverters, and batteries.

Most market intelligence providers which take a
top-down approach, using interviews to that are infrequent and whose accuracy depends
upon self-reported information. The market analysis approach breaks the links between
the datapoints, thereby reporting on market share without being able to report on the
    drivers of market share.

In contrast, SunWiz unleashes that value of rich. system-level datasets which retain the
relationships between datapoints. This means we can report on market share AND its drivers, including installer loyalty, share-of-wallet, price premium. Our data enables
manufacturers to respond with the right lever: for example by showing that a recent
down-turn in volumes is due to large installers doing less volume of your product
because they are using more of your competitors.

    We provide monthly-updated information

1.Perfect vs Regular & Reliable: Would you prefer something highly accurate but 12 months after the moment you can respond/react to it? Or would you prefer something you can regularly and confidently rely upon? Something that enables you to track and regularly respond?

2.The accuracy of the market share is something that is very reasonable, we get very good feedback. It may not always be absolutely accurate. But it is however relatively accurate – very useful for observing shifts, changes and trends.

3.The next thing to say about accuracy is that we are transparent about our accuracy.

4.For example, the accuracy does vary by country – it’s high where we access thousands of installers, or hundreds, or dozens for example. Where it gets more accurate is doing whole-of-market assessments for equipment characteristics. Where it gets less accurate is sub-national assessments of market share.

5.The partner to accuracy is consistency. Our methodology is consistent between countries and between months. This enables you to make reliable comparisons, which is very difficult to do when receiving intel via multiple channels, each prepared by different people with different assumptions.

6.The next consideration is frequency, which is monthly updates. This is possible because we’re not relying upon interviews. Together with the depth of insights into the drivers of market share – I think that trumps everything.

7.Ultimately, there’s nothing that comes even close to our frequency, depth in most places in the world, with an accuracy that’s acceptable, reliable, transparent, consistent and understandable.

We have been doing market analysis since 2009. Since 2020 we have worked with data partners to unleash the value of their data, providing insights into manufacturer market share, installer behavior, and product characteristics. Data partners include finance providers, proposal software providers, and certificate agencies (AUS). Those data partners provide us with project-level information about the size and price of the system, the equipment used, its location (country and state). Some data also provides an installer pseudonym that means we can’t identify the installer but we can track their size and buying behavior such as loyalty and share-of-wallet. We also incorporate data from governments (AUS, DE, UK), permits (USA) and re-report data from institutions such as IEA-PVPS. We do provide information about market share where available (e.g. MaStR DE, MCS UK, REC Registry AU, permits USA). We also provide market growth indicators and predictors, including volumes of customer proposals, shipping data, internet trends, number of installers active, and more.

Our market share data is weighted based upon whether a project is installed, sold, or proposed. As yet we don’t upscale the data to the market total as most countries lack a reliable monthly-updated market tally.

We provide a platform full with a rich variety of charts for you to navigate, and topics that are regularly sent out to you. Content is structured by topic and country, and is tailored to the viewer. Your internal analysts can dive deeper into our data through optional interactivity. We can also prepare custom views and data tables for you.

We operate with a very lean team due to process automation, use of modern techniques, a unique approach, and because we don’t rely upon interviews.
