Which battery brands are most popular in Australia?

SunWiz is the preeminent provider of analysis of the Australian battery market.

We’ve recently expanded our coverage of the battery manufacturer market share.

Here’s some interesting things we’ve seen.

Chinese brands dominate the market

Just as China has entrenched itself as a provider of good quality solar panels at very affordable prices, Chinese battery brands have also established themselves as leaders in the Australian behind-the-meter market. Non-Chinese companies must now tussle over less than a quarter of the market.

Who has the biggest battery?

In a recent blog post, we noted consumers’ preferred battery size is rapidly shifting. This can advantage some battery manufacturers (e.g. those with larger or smaller batteries, or those with modular increments). As a result of varying battery configurations, the average battery size varies considerably by manufacturer. As illustrated below, on average Enphase’s storage systems are half the size of the battery manufacturer with the largest system size.

Who has the biggest battery market share?

Because of this considerable variance in average size, the battery leaderboard looks quite different when displayed in terms of #systems or kWh – as was illustrated in SunWiz’s 2024 Annual Battery Market Report. This is also playing out on a monthly basis in 2024, as depicted by the difference in market share of the orange, dark blue, and light-blue lines in the chart below.

Who’s stealing market share from leading battery manufacturers?

Just as there are continual changes in manufacturer average system size, so too are there continual changes in market share and rank. Therefore we note the recent growth of two lines in this chart, one of whom only just appeared in the country. Together these manufacturers appear to be stealing market share from the leading manufacturers.
