The best places for solar power in 2023

For the Australian PV industry, 2023 was a year that was better by most accounts than 2022, unless you were in solar farm construction.

But that growth didn’t apply evenly across the nation.

Just as some system sizes became more popular than others, some states grew much faster than others. While WA contracted by 7%, Tasmania grew by 44%. The most outstanding growth was in NSW, which grew by 24%; quite the achievement for the largest solar market. In doing so, NSW & TAS had record years, and NSW rose to conquer 33% of the STC market; indeed 33% of the total 2023 PV market.

There was also variation within each state, with some postcodes growing much faster than others. The chart below shows the top 5 postcodes for sub-100kW capacity to date, highlighting the additional amount that was added in 2023 and its percentage of all-time capacity.

The leading postcode of the nation was 3209 in Victoria, a lead that extended in 2023 as 14% of its total capacity was installed last year. The top postcode in NSW (2765) grew enormously, with 26% of its total capacity installed in 2023. That was sufficient growth for it to overtake the previously leading NSW postcode (2155). There’s also a new leading postcode in SA (5114).

If you’d like to position yourself for maximum likelihood of success in 2024, it makes sense to read the 2024 Annual SunWiz Australian PV Market Report, available here.
