Origin Story
In 2005, Warwick Johnston was in a meeting with Australia’s solar industry leaders, attempting to create a roadmap to present to government. They hit a fundamental problem: “How can we create a roadmap if we don’t know where we are now?”
At that time, there was virtually no data on the size of the industry, the number of installations, or market dynamics. The industry was flying blind into the future.
Four years later, after gaining experience with solar retailers and consultancies, Warwick founded SunWiz in 2009. His first project was simple but revolutionary: determine how many solar installations actually happened in the previous year and publish that information.
The response was immediate. Chris O’Brien from SunPower Maxion asked: “Can you do that for us each and every month?” The answer was yes—and SunWiz was born.
What started as answering “how many installations?” has evolved into a sophisticated intelligence platform that is unmatched. Today, we don’t just report what happened—we interpret what’s happening under the surface, identify the drivers of market share, and recommend specific actions to improve competitive position. The platform’s granularity and insights takes people’s breath away and makes headlines.
The need we identified in 2005 hasn’t gone away. If anything, as the industry has grown globally, the demand for transparent, verified, granular market intelligence has become more critical than ever.
