Successful salespeople go where the customers are, and sell them what they want to buy.Â
Sales of solar batteries increased by 55% in 2022, according to the recently released 2023 SunWiz Annual Australian Battery Market Report. And the market is expected to grow further from there.
Sellers of Energy Storage Systems (ESS) will get the greatest reward for their efforts by targeting the customers that are most likely to buy, with the products and system sizes that are most in demand.
SunWiz data shows a shift towards 9kWh and 14kWh battery sizes, so you should be selling more of those.
And it makes sense to specialise in battery sales. The chart below shows SunWiz analysis of 2022 Victorian Solar Homes Program rebate data, plotting the % of battery rebates (vertical axis) allocated by retailer classification (horizontal axis). Retailers are classified by their degree of battery specialisation – the % of total rebates allocated that are for ESS. This chart shows (with conclusions supported by SunWiz proprietary data):Â
- 16% of VSHR ESS rebates come from ESS-exclusive (or near-exclusive) retailers
- 25% of VSHR ESS rebates come from retailers that do more ESS installations than PV installations (as-rebated)
- 49% of VSHR ESS rebates come from retailers for whom ESS represents less than 25% of their rebates.
The 2023 SunWiz Annual Australian Battery Market Report also includes customer demographics, some of which we’re fortunate to be able to share here.
This chart (data courtesy Solar Victoria) shows the percentage of rebates by age group, separately for batteries (blue) and PV (orange). The line thickness indicates the household income range.
Here’s some takeaways from this data source:
- Purchasers of batteries are much more likely to be older than purchasers of PV
- Purchasers of batteries are much more likely to be lower income households.
This data suggests that older retirees are more likely to purchase a battery system. Before everyone rushes out to target that demographic, note that this datasource relates to the Solar Victoria rebate program, which excludes households with annual income greater than $180k. SunWiz assessment shows this rebate program forms 50% of the Victorian market, indicating there is another large distinct demographic that is purchasing batteries.
